Never has a soggy bottom caused so much disappointment – Obviously I’m talking about the Great British Bake Off. The BBC show has revitalised our country’s baking culture and we as a nation are now obsessed with whipping up baked goodies.

This is certainly no bad thing. Baking got us through the war with many baking their own breads and adapting recipes to suit ration allowances. However, life’s gotten much busier and tending to a treacle tart seems less than appealing. Understandably so, mortgages, meetings and everything in-between makes us time-short and stressed.

However, don’t forget the cathartic nature of baking. Creating something delicious and then greedily devouring it is heavenly…and going by the number of proud cake instagrams, it’s definitely a remedy for the modern age.

Novices fear not. Simple, ‘beginner’ ideas include brownies, bread buns and even pizza! For fast and no-fuss recipes, look up Nigella Lawson’s simply decadent offerings or go online to BBC’s GoodFood.

Whether it brings you back to your grandmother’s kitchen or your first bite into a buttery croissant – bake! It will do you the world of good and what’s not to love about having your cake and eating it?
