If you’ve been having problems sleeping like our Kate then the time might have come to invest in a new mattress. To do this properly it’s important you know what types of mattresses are out there and how they differ, so on that note here’s our short introduction to the wonderful world of mattresses.

Open sprung mattresses. The grandfathers of the mattress world, these classics are made with a single long piece of wire coiled into springs. Light, easy to turn and durable, a mattress of this type with a standard tension, like our Ockley Open Sprung, tend to be perfect for single beds as they provide just enough comfort and stability for one person. If you’re looking for support for two people then we recommend you check out our Overton Open Sprung, which has slightly firmer springs than your usual open sprung mattress to provide additional support and stability.

Pocket sprung mattresses. Pocket sprung mattresses are made of individual small springs each housed in their own fabric pockets. These marvellous springs work independently from one another, moulding to your contours to provide super comfort and additional stability – wriggling partners shouldn’t wake you! There’s actually a test for these mattresses where bowling pins are placed at one end and a bowling balls thrown on the other. If the mattress is high quality, like our own Penselwood Pocket, the pins stay upright and the test is passed.

Memory foam mattresses. Originally developed by NASA and improved by various mattress makers around the world, the memory foam mattress… well it remembers. It literally moulds to hug your body to offer maximum support and comfort as well as being rather outstanding at absorbing any movement. Even better, high quality memory foam mattresses, like our Milton Memory, will also adjust to your body shape and temperature keeping you cool all night long.

Pillow-top mattresses. Perhaps an un-sung hero, these mattresses have a base pocket sprung mattress with an extra layer of mini pocket springs on top making high quality ones, like our Timsbury Tops, deep, super supportive and quite frankly absurdly comfortable. I have to admit this is my personal fave and the one I have at home!
