Mattresses

With the average person spending over one third of their life, that's 15 years, in bed by the time their 45, the correct mattress can mean the difference between years of sweet dreams or years of endless sheep counting!

To help ensure you end up in the sweet dreams bucket, we've put together a handy guide of things to consider when buying a mattress.

We're starting with this one for mattresses because, given how much time you'll spend in bed and how important sleep is for your general well-being, we cannot iterate enough to please, please, please remember that a good mattress is worth every penny!

Loved

Feel

A mattress is like a loved piece of clothing; it should complement your own personal shape, weight and sleep position.

As a rule of thumb the heavier you are, the firmer your mattress should be. A light person on a firm mattress is not heavy enough to engage the springs: because the springs are not being engaged, they offer no support. A heavier person on a soft mattress engages the springs too much, so the springs stop working and give no support.

As a rough rule of thumb...

Loved

Standard
Our standard mattresses will be easier on your bones

Loved

Firm
Our firm mattresses will support you the best

Loved

Very Firm
Our very firm mattresses will give you the best night's sleep

As well as your weight, you should also consider how you sleep:

I sleep on my back...

On your back...

If you sleep on your back you could be better off with one of our firm mattresses which provide the best support for your lower back.

I sleep on my side...

On your side...

If you sleep on your side you could be better off with one of our standard mattresses and a high pillow to allow your shoulders and hips to sink in.

I sleep on my front...

On your front...

If you sleep on your front you could be better off with one of our very firm mattresses and a low pillow for the best support of your neck muscles.

As this can get a little confusing if your weight and sleeping position means you fall into two slightly different camps, we always say that your sleeping position should take precedence.

Fillings

Fillings

You want lots of fillings and lots of the right fillings!

The more fillings a mattress contains, the more sumptuous the feel of the mattress. But it's not just the amount of fillings that's important, it's the type of fillings too. If you're after a top quality mattress it's important to look for one that's packed with natural, breathable fillings so you won't overheat - the natural materials keep air circulating in the mattress and they take moisture and perspiration away from your body.

Tape Measure

Size

The most comfortable mattress sadly means big fat zero if your bed is too small. Make sure you have enough space to sleep comfortably next to your partner. This varies of course depending on if you huddle up together like penguins or sleep at polar opposite sides of the bed, but you know how you sleep so take this into consideration when choosing the right size for you!

Open Sprung Mattress

Open sprung or coil mattresses are full of springs which are interconnected and are fantastic if you're looking for a really well-made, comfortable mattress that will give you many years of beautiful sleeps without breaking the bank.

Make sure when you buy an open sprung mattress:

  • It's packed with multiple layers of bouncy upholstery and hand-quilted insulator layers for supreme comfort
  • It's made from super hardwearing and individually heat treated British open coil springs, not some cheap imitations
  • It has a hand-quilted or tufted cover made from the finest Irish damask

Pocket Sprung Mattress

Pocket sprung mattresses are full of pocketed springs...surprisingly. Each of these marvellous springs work independently compared to the open coil, meaning they can contour to your body shape better and there's less chance of you rolling towards each other during the night or being woken by a wriggling partner!

Make sure when you buy a pocket sprung mattress:

  • It's packed with multiple layers of bouncy upholstery and hand-quilted insulator layers for supreme comfort
  • It's made from super hardwearing and individually heat treated British pocket springs, not some cheap imitations
  • It has a hand-quilted or tufted cover made from the finest Irish damask
  • It has stitched sides for strong, stable edges - hand stitching is a sign of craftsmanship and quality

Finishing Touches

Finishing Touches

The finishing on your mattress is just as important as what's on the inside. Different finishes will give a different feel so it's important you get the right one for you.

Hand-Tufted

Hand-Tufted

This traditional skill ensures that all the fillings in your mattress are secured to provide the perfect sleeping surface and a tailored finish. Tufts are passed completely through the mattress layers, creating a button effect on the top and bottom of the mattress. This finish can make the mattress feel slightly firmer than its quilted counter-part.

Hand-Quilted

Hand-Quilted

The top ticking fabric is stitched to the top comfort layer(s) in patterns to give a cushioned finish. The finish is flatter than a tufted mattress however the quilting does not secure the mattress the way tufting does so it really depends on what's more important to you.
