Sofa Beds, Sofas & Armchairs

Sofa Shapes

Shape

When looking at shapes it's important to understand the styles of backs, cushions, arms, feet and fillings.

Backs

The style and comfort offered by the back of the sofa is super important and should be considered just as much as the seats.

Cushion Back

Cushion Back

The most popular back in the sofa world, two fibre cushions of an equal size are placed across the back of the design. They're super handy as they can be turned and moved to even out wear and tear and the covers can be removed and washed as per our Fabric Guide. If this is your favoured style, consider comparing the ‘total height' measurements between designs in our Dimensions and Delivery Guide to get a good idea of which will offer you the right height back support.

Scatter Back

Scatter Back

A more informal look, an array of large fibre scatter cushions are placed across the back of the design. This back gives fabulous flexibility to ‘mix it up' with how you organise the scatters to give you the look and feel you want. If you like to really sink back into a cloud of cushions at the end of the day then this could be the winning back for you.

Fixed Back

Fixed Back

A smart and more formal look, the back frame of the sofa is itself sprung and upholstered. It scores top points in the low maintenance stakes but you won't get that squish factor like the other backs so it depends what you're after.

Seats

As with backs, seats are really important to get right and are a very personal decision.

Cushioned Seats

Cushioned Seats

More conventional, cushioned seats can be turned and moved to even out wear and tear and the covers can be removed and washed as per our Fabric Guide. Our seat cushions are filled with either reflex foam, siliconized hollow fibre or grade A Duck Feather-wrapped foam. Each offer a different type of sit and require different levels of maintenance. Have a gander at our “Fillings” section below to see which ones are right for you.

Fixed Seats

Fixed Seats

This is when the seat of the sofa itself is sprung and upholstered. Like a fixed back, this offers a super-neat, tailored appearance which requires no maintenance. As there are no cushions to turn however, wear can be really focused on the specific points where people park their cheeks. We don't currently offer any fixed seat designs however if it's of interest do get in touch with our team as we may be able to hand-craft something completely individual for you.

Arms

The arm is really important in the furniture world. It's the key thing which determines how classic or modern a design is and should also be considered when thinking about the space and proportions in your room of choice.

Scroll Arms

Scroll Arms

These are synonymous with classic sofas and chairs. They can be fantastically traditional, with pleating and piping, like our Barrington, or very clean and simple, where they're almost contemporary, like our Langridge.

Howard Arms

Howard Arms

This is a really classic style. The arm is low and stops short of the front of the sofa to be hugged by the seat cushion, like our Downton. This is a very popular look in period homes.

Flared Arms

Flared Arms

These come in lots of shapes and sizes but generally flare outwards slightly from the bottom of the sofa to create a welcoming appearance, like our Elmley. A flared arm can take up as much space as a wide, square arm, so be careful to consider this when thinking about the space in your room.

Square Arms

Square Arms

Square arms are the most popular shape for a more contemporary look. They come in a variety of widths from our Somerton, which has wide, striking arms, to our Foxham, which has wafer-thin arms.

Feet

All our feet are made from beautiful solid wood and are screwed into the hardwood frame of the sofa. These feet are seen across most of our designs, however a small handful have glides instead, like our Barrington and Burstow. Glides are plastic and are designed to blend in more with the look of the sofa and as well as make it easy to manoeuvre.

Bun Feet

Bun Feet

Round, shallow feet which tend to be more classic for our designs.

Turned Feet

Turned Feet

A classic style which gives a bit more height than the bun.

Sabre Feet

Sabre Feet

Angled wooden feet, which give an elegant, unfussy appearance to the sofa. They should always be turned so that the foot flares inwards, not outwards.

Fillings

The right seat fillings on your sofa are super important to ensure you get the comfort and maintenance which is perfect for you. Each type will offer different squish and shake factors.

Fillings Key

Reflex foam wrapped in stockinette

Provide a very supportive and relatively firm sit, keep their shape really well and require very little maintenance – just a simple turn every 2-3 months. They're also smarter in appearance to their softer siblings and look particularly top-notch on more contemporary and slick styles.

Important tip:
Make sure you opt for reflex foam not foam. Reflex foam will recover really well for many years, returning to its original shape and density when you hop of the sofa. Ordinary, cheaper imitations, such as standard foam will not.

Siliconized hollow fibre

Fibres are sewn into individual channels like a duvet, they stop the fibre all going into one place and the fibre is silicone treated to stop it from gathering and to keep it supple.

They give a slightly softer sit and a more relaxed look than reflex foam, however, they'll need a little more love - a quick plump-up after use and a real shake down once a month.

Siliconized hollow fibre

Feather-wrapped foam

High quality reflex foam wrapped in Grade A Duck Feathers sewn into individual channels within the cushion to stop the feathers all going into one place.

These are really snug on your bum but like our siliconized hollow fibre cushions require a quick plump after use to keep their shape and comfort.

Don't forget, whatever you plump for (sorry we couldn't resist), when your sofa first arrives they may feel a little firmer than expected.
This is because they're brand spanking new. Get cosy on your sofa and after a few weeks of use they'll relax and feel just right.

Sofa Beds

Sofa Beds

As well as all of the above, it's really important to think about how you want to use your lovely sofa bed. We offer two types of sofa beds: everyday and occasional use.

Everyday Sofa Beds

As all our everyday sofa beds use a ridiculously high quality two-fold mechanism to open the sofa into a bed, we're able to put one of our three luxurious W&H signature mattresses into each and every one:

Open Sprung

All our everyday sofa beds come with our beautiful W&H open sprung mattress as standard:
Incredibly thick and luxurious at 14 cm deep
Packed with multiple layers of bouncy upholstery and hand-quilted insulator layers for supreme comfort
Made from super hardwearing and individually heat treated British open coil springs
Hand-quilted cover made from the finest Irish damask

Pocket Sprung

For an additional £80, all our everyday sofa beds can come with our perfect pocket sprung mattress:
Incredibly thick and luxurious at 14 cm deep
Packed with multiple layers of bouncy upholstery and hand-quilted insulator layers on both sides for supreme comfort
Contains 1,000 individual heat treated British pocket springs which work independently to mould to your contours
Hand-tufted cover made from the finest Irish damask

Consider opting for the pocket sprung mattress if:
You want an even more luxurious night's sleep - each of these marvellous springs works independently compared to the open coil which are inter-connected, meaning they can contour to your body shape better
Two people will be sleeping on the mattress regularly – as mentioned, each of these springs works independently, meaning as well as sleeping in absolute comfort you shouldn't be woken by a wriggling partner!

Memory Foam

For an additional £100, all our everyday sofa beds can come with our magical memory foam mattress:
Incredibly thick and luxurious at 12 cm deep
Packed with visco memory foam which seamlessly adapts to your body shape
Covered in beautiful Belgian damask which intelligently dissipates moisture keeping you cool throughout the night

Consider opting for the memory foam mattress if:
You like maximum support whilst you sleep
You want to relieve joint pressure in the night
You have a bad back

Occasional Sofa Beds

Remember if you're looking for something for guests or yourself to sleep on occasionally, you might want to consider our Appley which comes as a 1, 2 or 3 seater. Easy to use and a real space saver with no arms, it's a really popular choice amongst our customers looking for something to use less regularly but who still want a great night's sleep.
