As a team of furniture and interior enthusiasts we’re building ourselves quite a library of interior design reads at the Willow and Hall offices. There are even calls for a cosy reading corner to be created when we move to new offices later in June! A recent and much enjoyed read for many of us has been Bright Bazaar: Embracing Colour For Make-You-Smile Style by Will Taylor, a copy of which is now up for grabs in our colour competition below.

The book is beautiful – with full page, stunning photography as Will travels his way around Europe and America styling homes. Will’s writing style is also wonderfully accessible and easy to dip into; an ease of welcoming in the reader perhaps developed from blogging on a blog of the same name.

We particularly liked the focus throughout on how colour can be used to express personality and what a ‘personal element of interior’ colour is. Something we at Willow and Hall get to appreciate on a daily basis by the wide range of fabrics our customers order our products in.

An early section of the book is encouragingly entitled: ‘Colour is your Friend’. In it we are given 10 easy to follow steps to colour confidence. We loved the suggestion to ‘plan, hunt, gather’: doing your research before deciding on a colour scheme and creating a mood board to think through colours and theming; with a suggestion for collecting swatch samples to form a springboard of ideas.

The idea for colour layering before committing to a colour appealed to many of us in the office, with Will explaining in easy to understand terms the idea of living with a colourful throw or cushions on your sofa to introduce a colour to a part of the room you are changing.

The reader is treated to colour being made fun as Will gives us 10 ‘Colour Cocktails’ to work through. The range of colours considered should meet most tastes as soft pastels to bold statement colours are covered, made all the more appealing by headings such as ‘The Tangerine Dream’ and ‘The Lavender Lick’!

All of the content remains consistent in its focus on helping readers bring colour into their homes in a personalised way. We think it’s a book that you’ll find useful for years to come for whenever you have the urge to inject some new colour into your home.
