I’ve always had a thing for blankets and throws of all kinds, shapes and colours.

We have a whole basket of them near the sofa in the living room and I tend to choose one over the other for different occasions: there’s a blanket I always pick when taking a nap and a throw I use to warm my legs up in the colder months.

While almost all of the throws are great at doing their job (keeping us warm and snug), some of them look better than the others on different kinds of sofas.

Unlike colourful vintage cushions, I’ve always loved a classic British vibe for my throws and blankets. In addition to looking amazing, they all seem to have a certain sense of history and timelessness to them – a feeling I’ve always adored for both furniture and home decor elements. Here are some of my favourite finds from the latest online blanket shopping binge.

Let’s begin with a few classic neutral designs. The beautiful Alba Throw above is made from Shetland wool, meaning it’s ideal for snuggling up on those colder nights. This extremely soft and cosy throw is available for £120 at Laura’s Loom.

Houndstooth is one of the most recognizable Scottish patterns out there which will never get old. The handsome white and grey Bronte Throw costs £50 at Longwood Blankets and goes perfectly with a darker coloured sofa or sofa bed.

For something a little more colourful, there’s the blue Herringbone Throw from The Wool Room (£65 at Not on the High Street). In addition to being excellent to cuddle up in, it can look amazing on any neutral or pastel coloured sofa.

Welsh Cwm Elan Blanket

A colourful blanket or throw can make any neutral sofa stand out from its surroundings and make the atmosphere a little more playful. The Welsh Cwm Elan Blanket above comes with a classic window pane pattern and can be bought for £85 directly from Felin Fach.

The traditional Cottage Check Blanket

The traditional Cottage Check Blanket from Tweedmill above goes for £48 at Coast & Country Interiors and can create a summery feeling for your sofa all year long with a handful of vivid colours.
